Cables look simple, yet the wrong one is a common reason a phone charges slowly or a file transfer fails. This guide covers what separates one cable from another.
USB-C is the reversible, oval connector now standard on most new Android phones, tablets and laptops. Lightning is Apple's connector, used on iPhones before the switch to USB-C. Micro-USB is the older, tapered connector still found on many budget phones, accessories and peripherals. The connector shape has to match your device - no adapter changes what the device itself supports.
Two cables with identical connectors can support very different charging speeds. This depends on the internal wire gauge and, for USB-C to USB-C cables used at higher power, on an internal chip that identifies the cable's rating. A thin cable intended for low-power charging will physically fit but will limit the current, which is why a phone sometimes charges slowly on one cable and quickly on another.
Some inexpensive cables carry power only, with the data wires omitted. These charge a device but will not transfer files or allow it to be recognised by a computer. If you need to move photos or run diagnostics, confirm that the cable supports data.
Longer cables have more electrical resistance, which can slightly reduce charging performance at high power. For everyday charging the difference is minor; a one-metre cable is a practical default, with two metres or more useful where the socket is far from where you sit.
Cables almost always fail at the point where the cord meets the connector, because that is where bending concentrates. Reinforced strain relief, braided jackets and avoiding sharp bends when packing all extend service life. Pulling on the cable rather than the plug when unplugging is a leading cause of early failure.
Match the connector to your device, pick a cable rated for the charging speed you want, confirm data support if you need it, and choose a length that suits where you actually charge.
